Dangerous Musings

🌍 Tell Me About Yourself

ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: 2024-04-05

Preface: This article is poorly written because I don't like to talk about my history. Who likes to anyway, autobiographers?

You will see run-on sentences, incorrect comma usage, bracketed interjections, a lack of transition phrases, and inappropriate formatting. I was reluctant to publish this at all, so please excuse this abominable work, which I can only call a "rough draft."

What I've done

In 5th grade, I loved solving Rubik's Cubes from 2x2 to 6x6 (anything bigger takes forever to reassemble after it inevitably explodes). The next year, I took up learning yo-yo tricks, which won me the 6th grade talent show. Based on the positive reception of my act, the vice principal started a club! At that time I loved graphic novels like Amulet, Bone and Missile Mouse.

Fast forward a few years, at the age of 13, I was doing freelance videography for local companies. Years later, I used those skills to start a web design YouTube channel. The channel would pivot into a showcase for interesting tools and software concepts.

In my senior year of high school, I took uninteresting STEM classes like CAD, CNC machining, 3D printing, mechanical engineering, circuitry, soldering, etc. However, the teacher of that class would refer me to my first software internship position at Phidgets while working as a salesman.

In 2022, I quit my sales job to get my first part-time job as a backend software developer at the age of 17. The only university program I applied to rejected my application, so I kept working until I resigned.

Stephanie, a front-end developer at my first job, referred me to her new company. After becoming a full-time software developer at her company, I stopped uploading YouTube videos at the age of 18. Briefly, I did some stand-up comedy.

I also reapplied and was accepted to many universities at this point. However, I turned them all down (goodbye $1000 in application fees) in favour of my new position. At the age of 19, I would start a part-time Bachelor of Computer Science Program at the University of Hertfordshire.

Who am I?

Communication is something I've always struggled with, and I don't consider my speaking style normal yet. I'm a shy prude when it comes to initiating interactions, but when someone interacts with me, I exude overconfidence because I sound like I'm trying to sell them something.

I don't have any close friends.

Hobbies/Interests

Of course, I like to write. When I'm not studying, I'm usually reading or writing something. Ironically, I hated every English class in school except the 12th grade when Mr. Nisbett showed us Kenneth Branaugh's Hamlet. Ironically, I can count the novels I have read on two hands, so I don't consider myself an intellectual.

Random flex: I memorized the entire 4th soliloquy of Hamlet

I currently have 147 movies on my Letterboxd watchlist for when I'm too tired to read/write. I just watch based on the watchlist, as I don't have any streaming services that recommend anything to me.

About once a month I play on my sim rig to practice racing mechanics with the AI. Once a week, I practice a few songs on the piano and I'm not learning anything new at the moment.

Interacting with people and making them happy makes me feel good even though I am an introvert. Maybe it's because I don't want them to feel what I felt when I was young: isolated and sad. Drinking with people is also nice. But when I travel, I prefer to go alone.

Who Do I Want To Be?

I want to have the courage to meet and connect with new people. Other than that, I have no idea.
